A resistance band is only useful for as long as it stays hard. That sounds obvious, but it’s the reason most band purchases end up in a drawer: someone buys a single tube rated “medium,” gets stronger in five weeks, and then has nothing left to push against. Progression is the whole game, and bands progress differently than iron. A dumbbell rack gives you 5-pound jumps. Bands give you overlapping resistance curves, and the jump between a light loop and the next one up can be 20 pounds of peak tension. Buying a set — or buying with a set in mind — is what separates a band that trains you from a band that entertains you for a month.

There are really only four families worth your money: flat continuous loops (the thick “power bands” people hang from pull-up bars), tube bands with clips and handles, fabric loops for hips and glutes, and light latex mini-loops for warm-ups and shoulder work. Each one solves a problem the others handle badly. A power band is superb for assisted pull-ups and deadlift overload and awful for lateral raises. A clip-and-handle tube system feels like a cable machine and will snap a carabiner if you treat it like a pull-up assist. Below is how I’d assemble a kit that keeps working at month two and month twenty, plus the trade-offs nobody prints on the packaging.
